Born on July 8, 1859, in Gorebridge, United Kingdom, she established herself as a significant literary figure in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Throughout her career, she wrote under her maiden name, as well as the pen name David Lyall, and later adopted the name Mrs. Burnett Smith. Swan was remarkably productive, publishing over 200 novels, serials, and short stories between 1878 and her passing.
