This paper examines whether creative characteristics have a positive impact on the mathematical potential of children between the ages of five and seven. A comprehensive literature review investigates the links between creativity and mathematical ability and presents a system of characteristics for creativity in preschool children. Practical examples that promote creativity in children complement the theoretical discussion. Through the NÖbegabt5-7 research project, in cooperation with the University of Education Lower Austria and the KPH Vienna/Krems, observations were carried out in several kindergartens in Lower Austria using indicator tasks to identify possible mathematical aptitude in preschool children. The project is being continued in the first year of primary school. The literature review establishes a link between creativity and mathematical performance. However, the evaluation within the research project only reflects this theory in a weakened form, but does not rule itout either.
