1883. This volume contains both Part I and II of Mental and Moral Science. Alexander Bain, Scottish philosopher and educationalist, was an early proponent of scientific psychology. Along with his friend, John Stuart Mill, Bain was a major proponent of the British school of empiricism: a theory which based all knowledge on basic sensory experiences and not on introspection. Bain's philosophical and scientific writings were completed during his twenty years as a professor at Aberdeen. This treatise contains a Systematic Exposition of Mind, a History of the leading Questions in Mental Philosophy, and a copious Dissertation on Ethics. This edition is divided into two parts: one containing Psychology and the History of Philosophy; the other the Theory of Ethics and the Ethical Systems.
