Autorenporträt
I started drawing young, always using the scraps from my mom's couponing or pen pal letters. It was the best hobby she could afford to give me, and it became my way of quieting the world. Drawing has always been where I feel most at peace, focused, safe, and able to make sense of things. After my mom passed, I found a handwritten Halloween story she had read to my elementary school class dressed as a green faced witch. Sitting with that story, I realized I didn't just want to draw anymore, I wanted to create something complete. I wanted to make something lasting. Illustrating her words became a way to reconnect, to grieve, and to honor what she gave me and that's when I created and self published "The Electrifying Scarecrow." The idea for Mergus, Fergus, and Floyd came while I was planting my wife and I's garden. There was something healing about tending to the soil, growing food, and imagining a world built around small, intentional care. It made me think of the stories my wife's mother used to tell her, or what I imagined them to be, having known Kathie. Improvised tales about three gnome neighbors. After my mother in law passed, those characters stayed with us. I wanted to build something lasting from those memories, too. This book is an act of love, rooted in memory, grown from the hope that quiet kindness can still change the world.
