David Émile Durkheim was a French sociologist and pioneer in the development of modern sociology and anthropology. He is considered as the founding father of the French positivist school of sociology and an early proponent of solidarism.His work and editorship of the first journal of sociology, L'Année Sociologique, as well as his creation of the first European department of sociology, helped establish sociology within academia as an accepted social science. During his lifetime, Durkheim gave many lectures, and published numerous sociological studies on subjects such as education, crime, religion, suicide, and many other aspects of society.
