Herman Melville, born in 1819 in New York, held various odd jobs after the early death of his father before he joined a whaling ship in 1841. As a freelance writer, he undertook extensive travels abroad and gave lectures, and he also worked as a farmer and customs inspector. Now mainly famous for his ¿Moby-Dick¿, the novelist, poet, and essayist died lonely and forgotten in 1891.
