Surveying drama intended for the serious theater, the author discusses modern versions of Shakespeare's plays, especially Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, and The Tempest. Although the focus is always on drama, contrast is supplied by fiction stemming from Hamlet and essays inspired by King Lear. The book concludes with an assessment of the influence of Shakespeare on the creative work of Shaw, Brecht, and Beckett. Originally published in 1976. Ruby Cohn(1922 - 2011)was for 30 years at UC Davis, where she was a member of the comparative literature and theatre departments and affiliated with the English and French departments. She taught courses on modern and experimental drama, Shakespeare's legacies in modern drama, dramatic genres, and Samuel Beckett and his contemporaries. She was one of the foremost authorities on the work of Samuel Beckett and published a number of books on his work, including A Beckett Canon (2001).
