Penelope Lively nace en El Cairo, Egipto, en 1933. Crece allí, pero se traslada a Inglaterra en 1945. Su formación en Historia Moderna en el St. Ann's de Oxford marca profundamen-te su producción literaria. Es autora de nume-rosos libros para niños como Astercote (1970), The Whispering Knights (1971), El fantasma de Thomas Kempe (1973), obra que le valdría la medalla Carnegie, y A Stitch in Time (1976), libro con el que gana el Whitbread Children's Book Award. Su versión de La Eneida, titulada En busca de una patria, vio la luz en 2001. Su primera incursión en la novela para adultos fue The Road to Lichfield (1977), selecciona-da para el Booker Prize en su categoría de ficción. Le siguieron títulos como Treasures of Time (1979), ganadora del Arts Council Na-tional Book Award o Judgement Day (1980). El mundo según Mark (Impedimenta, 2020) fue incluido en la lista del Booker Prize, galardón con el que no se haría hasta 1987, con Moon Tiger que ahora publica Impedimenta. Otros títulos posterio-res como La fotografía (2003), Making it Up (2005), Family Album (2009), nominado al Costa Novel Award, o Vida en el jardín (Im-pedimenta, 2019), son tan solo muestras de una vida entregada a la literatura. También da buena cuenta de este ánimo la colección de relatos Nothing Missing but the Samovar (1978), que ganó el Southern Arts Literature Prize. Lively se ha embarcado igualmente en la escritura autobiográfica, concretada en tres volúmenes: Oleander, Jacaranda: A Childhood Perceived (1994), A House Unlocked (2001) y Ammonites and Leaping Fish (2013). El poder de la memoria como arma individual, la relación del pasado con el presente y las diferencias entre los testimonios oficiales y los relatos personales son las claves de su proyecto literario. Su trabajo se caracteriza por su capacidad de llegar a distintos públicos y por rozar el ámbito académico a través de la 'metaficción historiográfica'. El guion radiofónico y televisivo, así como el artículo periodístico en medios como Sunday Times o The Observer también forman parte de su trayectoria. Es miembro de la Real Sociedad de Literatura, en 1989 fue nombrada Oficial de la Orden del Imperio Británico y en 2012, dama comendadora de la Orden del Imperio Británico. Actualmente, vive al norte de Londres y es una de las autoras más prolíficas y reconocidas de la narrativa británica actual.
