A secret is revealed in the ashes of a fire. Can a determined reporter uncover the truth before it's buried forever? London, 1884. When a house in Penny Green's new neighbourhood near Regent's Park is gutted by fire, she finds a connection to an unsolved murder. Unable to resist a story, the reporter dives into an investigation that leads her deep into London's East End and the notorious Ratcliffe Highway. The victim, Mary Steinway, was found dead in her squalid lodgings - a far cry from the Hampstead family home she grew up in. Penny pieces together how a young, middle-class lady fell from grace and met such a tragic end. But her inquiries stir long-buried secrets, and she soon makes dangerous enemies. When a shocking link to the aristocracy and the Houses of Parliament emerges, and her new police inspector husband conflicted about helping, Penny realises she's taking on more than she can handle. Can she expose the truth about Mary's death before those who want to keep the past hidden silence her for good? A thrilling Victorian whodunit that'll keep you spellbound until the final page.
