Lilian Garis, born Lilian C. McNamara on October 20, 1873, in Cleveland, Ohio, was an American author of juvenile fiction. Her parents, Edward and Winifred McNamara, were Irish immigrants. Garis began her writing career at a young age, taking charge of the "Woman's Page" at the Newark Evening News, becoming the first female reporter there. She was also an active suffragist. As a teenager, her poem "Peace" was featured in the New Jersey Scrapbook of Women Writers. Known by her pen name "Lilian Mack," Garis wrote for various newspapers, gaining recognition for her work. She married fellow writer Howard R. Garis in 1899, and together, they became one of the most prolific author duos of children's literature. Garis penned numerous books, including the Melody Lane series and Girl Scouts series, many published by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The couple had two children, Roger and Cleo. In 1951, they moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, where Garis continued her writing until her death on April 19, 1954, in Newark, New Jersey, at the age of 80.
