Born and raised in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, Joelena Spencer is a former recording artist and accomplished vocalist. She built a successful music career, signing with Qwest Records and working under the management of Blackground Music, fully immersing herself in the creative world of artistry and performance.In 2002, inspired by the birth of her daughters, Joelena shifted her artistic focus to writing. This passion led to the creation of Nani and The Magic Quilt, a heartfelt and imaginative book named after her daughter Nadia. The title originates from Nadia's own endearing mispronunciation of her name, calling herself "Nani." The first book in the series, The Princess and The Castle, was inspired by her youngest daughter, Natahlia.To bring her vision to life, Joelena founded ChiGirl Publishing, marking the beginning of a captivating book series. Through these stories, she explores the adventures of various ancestors from Nani's lineage, weaving together rich historical and cultural narratives that celebrate her family's heritage. Joelena's transition from the recording studio to the literary world is a testament to her multifaceted talents and deep dedication to storytelling.
