Louise Chandler Moulton was born on April 10, 1835, in Pomfret, Connecticut, to Lucius Chandler and Louisa Flagg Chandler. Raised in a household that valued literature and culture, she began writing poetry and stories at a young age. Her early literary promise led to regular contributions to major periodicals such as Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic, and The Galaxy, where her poems and stories were praised for their emotional depth and stylistic elegance. In 1855, she married publisher William Upham Moulton and moved to Boston, where she became a significant figure in the city s literary community. Her home served as a salon for writers and intellectuals, fostering exchanges between American and European authors. She published several volumes of poetry and short fiction, and also worked as a literary critic, known for her perceptive and generous reviews. Moulton traveled often to Europe, where she cultivated friendships with leading writers, expanding her influence beyond American literary circles. Her work combined emotional sensitivity with artistic discipline, reflecting a lifelong devotion to beauty, compassion, and insight. She died in Boston on August 10, 1908, leaving behind a respected legacy as a writer, mentor, and cultural figure.
