This volume completes the series of three that are devoted to St. Augustine's works on the New Testament. The writings on the Epistles to the Romans and Galatians are among his earliest. On the other hand, The Mirror is very late. It is unique among Augustine's writings in focusing on passages with a moral thrust from both the Old and the New Testaments, with brief introductions by Augustine himself, which were intended to serve as a kind of mirror to the reader: Would readers, in other words, be able to see themselves in these passages and measure themselves against them? All four works, especially The Mirror, offer valuable and sometimes new insights into Augustine's way of thinking.
