Notes on American Drama constitutes the course material that I have designed for my students of American drama. It outlines the history of theater and drama in general, with special focus on realist developments and the absurd, and also the history of American literary drama from the Provincetown Playhouse and O'Neill's first success as a playwright to Sam Shepard's late works. The different chapters are dedicated to five masters of the American stage, Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Edward Albee, and Sam Shepard.
