It was in 2003 that the EU Commission Directorate General for Education and Culture commissioned a "Study on young people's lifestyles and sedentariness and the role of sport in the context of education and as a means of restoring the balance". The Editors: Wolf-Dietrich Brettschneider is professor for sport sciences at the University of Paderborn, Germany. His areas of research are theoretical and methodological questions of sport pedagogy and empirical research on children and youth. Roland Naul, M.A., is professor for sport sciences and sport pedagogy at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany and head of the Willibald Gebhardt Research Institute e.V., Essen. He is specialized in European studies in physical education and youth sports.
