Otago Central or Central Otago was a parliamentary electorate in the Otago region of New Zealand, from 1911 to 1919 as Otago Central; from 1928 to 1957 as Central Otago; and from 1957 to 1978 as Otago Central. Before 1996, all Members of Parliament were directly chosen for office by the voters of an electorate. In 2008 under the MMP electoral system, 70 of the usually 120 seats in Parliament will be filled by electorate members, with the remainder being filled from party lists in order to achieve proportional representation (there were 69 electorate seats in 2005).
