Outsider: My Boyhood with Thoreau is a memoir told in vignettes by the mycologist and author Lawrence Millman. Early on, Millman found in Thoreau a kindred spirit, far outside of the mainstream social, sporting, and educational interests he was expected to be cultivating. And like Thoreau, he would rather be out-of-doors -- where he could socialize with mushrooms, insects, or earthworms -- than stuck in any indoor locale.

Autorenporträt
Lawrence Millman wears a variety of hats: he's an Arctic aficionado, an explorer, a mycologist, a raconteur, and a versatile writer. His 23 books include such titles as Last Places, An Evening Among Headhunters, The Book of Origins, A Kayak Full of Ghosts, Hero Jesse, Hiking to Siberia, Fungipedia, At the End of the World, Fascinating Fungi of New England, The Last Speaker of Bear, and Outsider. His essays have appeared in The Smithsonian, Atlantic Monthly, and National Geographic, among other magazines. Perhaps best of all, he has a mushroom named after him (Inonotus millmanii). He keeps a post office box in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
