Seventy-one years after its groundbreaking debut, Paper Money of the United States remains the standard reference on American currency. First published in 1953 by Robert Friedberg (1912-1963), the work revolutionized the field when the U.S. Treasury Department granted permission for photographs of U.S. paper money to be printed for the first time. Now in its 23rd edition, this fully revised and updated volume spans 336 pages and features nearly 1,000 full-color photographs of notes from America's greatest currency collections--including the rarest and most historically significant issues, from the earliest years of U.S. paper money to today. Highlights of the 23rd edition include: * Comprehensive coverage of Large Size Notes, Fractional Currency, Small Size Notes, Encased Postage Stamps, Confederate States, Colonial and Continental Currency, Treasury Notes from 1812-1861, error notes, Postage Envelopes, Postal Notes, and Uncut Sheets * Market valuations in up to seven grades of preservation * Over 990 full-color photographs for easy identification * The universally used Friedberg Numbering System(TM)--the industry standard for cataloging, buying, and selling U.S. currency * A complete listing of note-issuing National Banks, including the number of notes known for each * Comprehensive signature listings for U.S. currency issues * Available in two formats: softcover (11 x 8.5 inches) and hardcover (12 x 8.5 inches) When it was first released, Paper Money of the United States introduced innovations never before attempted, setting the standard for all future works in the field. For the past four decades, Arthur L. Friedberg--Honorary President of the International Association of Professional Numismatists and recognized by Coin World as one of the "Most Influential People in Numismatics, 1960-2020"--together with Ira S. Friedberg, has ensured that this landmark reference continues to serve collectors, dealers, historians, and institutions worldwide.
Arthur and Ira Friedberg have been professional numismatists for more than 30 years. Their firm, Coin & Currency Institute, is a founding member of the elite International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN). In June 2001, in Rome, Italy, Arthur Friedberg was elected president of the Association, marking the first time in the 50-year history of the organization that an American has occupied that office. He is now its Honorary President. He is also a life member of the American Numismatic Association and has been a member of the prestigious Professional Numismatists Guild since 1977. Both brothers joined Coin & Currency (a family firm) after college. Arthur graduated in 1972 with a BA in history from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He later earned an MBA from New York University, in 1976. Ira received his BS in journalism from Boston University in 1975. Within a short time they coauthored revisions of Gold Coins of the World (now in its tenth edition) and Paper Money of the United States (now in its 23rd edition). They also wrote the new editions of Appraising and Selling Your Coins, the 24th edition of which was released in 1996, and which has more than a quarter of a million copies in print. They also published and edited the revisions to R.S. Yeoman's classics Modern World Coins and Current Coins of the World. Arthur is a contributor to the Standard Catalog of World Coins and has written numerous articles for The Numismatist, the journal of the American Numismatic Association. He is paper-money columnist for Coin World. Arthur Friedberg has been a consultant to the Money and Medal Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy, and has testified as an expert on commemorative coin matters before the United States Senate Banking Committee. He has also been retained by advertising agencies, law firms, insurance companies, and others to pro- vide advice on coins and on international and domestic numismatic marketing. In 1993 the Friedbergs were awarded the Prix d'Honneur of the IAPN for Gold Coins of the World as the best book of the preceding year. They have also been presented the Medal of Merit of the American Numismatic Association (1992) for "distinguished service to the hobby." Arthur received the first place Heath Literary Award (1994) as author of the article judged best in The Numismatist during 1993, and the Swiss Vrenelli Prize (1999) for "outstanding contributions to numismatics."
