Samuel Johnson (1846-1901) fue un clérigo, historiador y educador yoruba nacido en Hastings, Sierra Leona, en el seno de una familia de origen nigeriano. Ordenado ministro de la Iglesia Anglicana, dedicó gran parte de su vida a la enseñanza y a la labor pastoral en Oyo, Nigeria. Su obra más importante, Historia de los Yorubas (publicada póstumamente en 1921), es considerada la primera gran sistematización escrita de la tradición oral, la política, la religión y las costumbres del pueblo yoruba, y constituye un referente esencial para la historiografía africana moderna.
