The middle section, 'The Collection, ' is just that; a smörgåsbord of stories with a variety of themes. In 'Old Tom, ' a tramp goes to the church graveyard in order to enjoy his supper in peace. To his surprise, he meets the Half Dead, who entertain him throughout the night. Until the cock crows . . . On the more serious side, Part Three or 'Living History' is a series of articles about the Spanish Civil War and life during Franco's dictatorship. They are based on interviews with Spanish people who have been persuaded to talk about their personal experiences.
Janet.Patterson was born in Cambridge, grew up in the suburbs of London and went on to study English and Drama at college, which she later taught at secondary school level. She then became a teacher of English as a foreign language, which enabled her to travel and work abroad. Her itchy feet soon led her to the South of France, where she studied French and taught English for two years. Upon her return to England, she found employment at an English Language school in Oxford. The following year she took a course in Business Studies at Oxford Brookes. In 1976 her nomadic life took her to New York, where she worked at the Ford Foundation. Her love for adventure led her to Russia while it was still behind the Iron Curtain, Lapland, where she slept in a Lap hut within the Arctic Circle and India, where she stayed on an Ashram. Ms. Patterson now lives in Spain, where she has fulfilled her life-long ambition of becoming a writer. She has published two books of short stories entitled Al Gore goes to Heaven and Mme. Wadjinski's Magic Mirror and is currently working on a family history with the pretentious title of Corbets and Kings.
