The term Desqumative gingivitis(DG) in this book is used as a description of the gingiva clinically which may manifest as a result of various underlying conditions. Few of the disorders include Oral lichen planus, Mucous membrane pemphigoid , Pemphigus vulgaris, Bullous pemphigoid , Erythema multiforme , Linear IgA disease, Lupus erythematosus, Epidermolysis bullosa aquisita, Dermatitis herpetiformis, local hypersensitivity reactions to various tooth pastes, Mouthwashes etc. DG is not associated with loss of attachment and alveolar bone destruction. Nevertheless, varied range of oral and gingival signs in these lesions can considerably compromise the patient's attitude to maintain oral hygiene. This could denote a possible risk factor for long-standing periodontal health.Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for all intraoral areas that appear unusual. Hence, knowledge and understanding of DG and associated conditions and disorders is pivotal in the clinical practice.
