This book highlights recent findings on different aspects of petroleum systems in both well-explored and under-explored sedimentary basins of India. It describes the workflow, recent technologies involved in de-risking the hydrocarbon prospectivity, and demonstrates effective ways of integrating different dataset in understanding petroleum systems. Petroleum (oil and gas) is the source of more than 50% of our current global energy supplies. These natural resources have been created in the Earth's subsurface by natural processes that have been active for more than a billion years. The combination of essential geological elements and processes that enable oil and gas to be generated and accumulated in reservoirs is described as a Petroleum system. Rigorous analysis of the petroleum systems in a basin is an essential requirement to assess the hydrocarbon prospectivity. India has a lot of hydrocarbon potential in different sedimentary basins. A synthesis of different aspects of petroleum system elements and processes was undertaken for a comprehensive understanding of hydrocarbon prospectivity in each basin of India. Also, it will help to strategize the hydrocarbon exploration for domestic and international stakeholders to ensure cost-effective and stable energy supplies. It will also serve as a textbook for the graduate and postgraduate students who are keen on pursuing their careers in the energy sector across the globe. Information presented in this book not only benefits students and academicians but also is directly relevant for the stakeholders of the oil and gas industry.
Dr. Somen Mishra is a Senior Petroleum Systems Expert, presently working as a Domain Expert for Degolyer and Macnaughton in India. He completed M.Sc. (Applied Geology) at the University of Allahabad (1993), M.Tech. (1995) and Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India (2001). He has 23 years of experience of working in Operating Companies like Reliance, Service Companies like Schlumberger, Halliburton and National Oil Companies like ONGC, India, in varied roles such as Senior Geoscientist, Consultant, Domain Expert, and Petroleum Systems Analyst. His expertise includes Basin Analysis, Regional level data synthesis for building coherent G & G model, Thermal-maturity assessments, migration modelling-pore pressure predictions, Geochemical evaluations, PIEA (Play Identification, Evaluation and Assessments), Prospect Risking and Ranking, Uncertainty Analysis, Resource Assessments, and Unconventional Petroleum Systems Analysis. Dr. Mishra has extensively worked in several Indian and global basins and has more than a decade of experience in teaching different aspects of Petroleum Systems to various organizations like ONGC, OIL, IOCL, BPRL, HPCL in India and abroad. He has also reviewed manuscripts in journals like Marine and Petroleum Geology, Journal of Asian Earth sciences, Arabian Journal of Geosciences etc. Dr. Santanu Banerjee has been a Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, since 1999. He completed M.Sc. (Applied Geology) at Allahabad University (1992) and Ph.D. at Jadavpur University (1997). He supervised several research projects on sedimentology, stratigraphy, and petroleum geology of Indian sedimentary basins. His research interests include microbial mat structures in Precambrian siliciclastics, origin of glauconite, sequence stratigraphy, and petroleum geology. He has worked extensively on sedimentary facies and basin analysis in the Precambrian Vindhyan basin of central India and Meso-Cenozoic Kutch basin. Dr. Banerjee has published more than 145 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to 25 book chapters, and edited 8 books. He supervised 20 students for the PhD degree. He is the country ambassador of the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). He currently serves on the editorial board of Journal of Palaeogeography, Journal of Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology, Journal of Petroleum Geology, Scientific Reports, and Sedimentary Geology
