Earl J. Hess is associate professor and chair in the Department of History at Lincoln Memorial University. He is author of several books on the Civil War, including In the Trenches at Petersburg: Field Fortifications and Confederate Defeat and Kennesaw Mountain: Sherman, Johnston, and the Atlanta Campaign.
