Living conditions and poverty are reflected in the population's food consumption. Food insecurity is essentially determined by the inability to access food or the resources allocated to production. The objective of this book was to characterize aspects of food security and health of families in rural areas of the CONSAD-Metropolitan South territory, located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The diagnosis of the rural reality indicated that most of the families surveyed had difficulties obtaining food. It can be seen that the relationship between habits and food and nutritional security is evident in the prevalence of self-reported diseases, which may be a reflection of nutritional imbalances. Production for self-consumption contributes to the food security of families, but only in a complementary way, as it does not meet all basic needs, requiring other forms of income to purchase food and other goods. The book is aimed at students; researchers and scholars of the subject; readers who work in the development and management of public policies, among other professionals.
