Emotional intelligence is a topic that has been researched since 1990, although scientific research still presents many criticisms regarding its existence. Several researchers say that emotional intelligence influences professional performance, but there is little research to support this claim. Thus, the objectives of this study were to investigate the levels of emotional intelligence among police officers, understand whether emotional intelligence influences professional performance, and determine whether emotional intelligence among police officers has characteristics similar to those of the general population. To characterize this study, it was necessary to validate the Police Professional Performance Concept Scale (ECDP-P). The results indicate that there is a significant correlation between emotional intelligence and professional performance. They also indicate that police officers have high levels of emotional intelligence, which, when compared to individuals in the general population, are found to be at the same level.
