"Als Julius Wellhausens 'Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels' 1878 erschienen, waren sie in der alttestamentlichen Wissenschaft sofort eine Sensation, freilich eine heftig umstrittene. Hier wurden die Schriften des Alten Testaments in eine andere geschichtliche Folge gebracht, als es der biblische Kanon vorgibt. Mehr noch: Wellhausens Rekonstruktion wies eine bedrängende Nähe zu der Frage nach den Wertmaßstäben der "modernen Kultur" auf. Dadurch erregte das Werk weit über das Gebiet der Theologie hinaus Aufsehen. [...] Die 'Prolegomena' liegen jetzt wieder in einem handlichen Nachdruck vor. Man muss kein Prophet sein, um ihren Lesern zeitlose Gegenwart zu verheißen."
