Platelet-rich plasma is defined as a portion of the plasma fraction of autologous blood having a platelet concentration above baseline. PRP is a first-generation platelet concentrate containing high concentration of platelet but minimal amount of natural fibrinogen. The granules release growth factors within 3-5 days of platelet activation, which sustain their stimulation of proliferative phase for 10 days after release. PRP can be used in dentistry in various ways such as onlay grafts, particulate grafts, for sinus lift method, alveolar cleft palate repair, oral/nasal fistula repair, post-operative hemostasis of bone graft donor sites, continuity defects of the mandible, and hemophiliacs. The PRF was first developed in France by Choukroun et al (2000) for the use in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is the 2nd generation platelet concentrate which contain platelets. When placed over the healing area, it becomes a good source of growth factors during healing. These growth factors are released upto 7 days.
