Psychopharmacology and Brain Transforming Interventions: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals examines how psychotropic medications and other interventions that impact brain chemistry can result in positive interventions for individuals with mental health concerns and disorders. The first section of the book examines the history of psychopharmacology and brain transforming interventions (BTIs); discusses critical treatment issues related to these treatments (e.g., efficacy, prescribing privileges, case conceptualization, and consultation); and examines a wide range of ethical, professional, and cross-cultural issues. Section two of the book describes common antidepressant, anti-anxiety, stimulant, mood stabilizing, anti-psychotic, and other psychotropic medications for children, adolescents, adults, and older people. Charts and tables illustrate the usage and complexity of these drugs. Section three reviews BTIs and includes chapters on brain stimulation techniques (e.g., electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and more), psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, (e.g., ketamine, LSD, psilocybin, and more), and complementary and alternative modalities (CAM) and neurocounseling (e.g., body therapies, energy approaches, whole medicine, as well as healthy eating, exercise, mindfulness, neurofeedback, and more) with emphasis on how they can offer relief for those who struggle with mental health problems. The first to provide information about psychopharmacology and BTIs in one convenient reference guide, the text is ideal for courses where knowledge of psychopharmacology and BTIs is crucial.
