Rattlin The Reefer is a classic naval adventure novel written by Captain Frederick Marryat. The story follows the journey of a young seaman named Jack Easy, who joins the Royal Navy in search of adventure and glory. Jack is assigned to serve on the HMS Harpy, a frigate tasked with intercepting smugglers and pirates along the coast of England. As Jack navigates life on board the Harpy, he encounters a cast of colorful characters, including his mentor, Lieutenant Gascoigne, and the ship's surgeon, Dr. McPhail. Together, they face a series of challenges and dangers, from storms at sea to skirmishes with enemy vessels. But the greatest threat to the crew of the Harpy comes from within, as they uncover a conspiracy among their own ranks. Jack and his comrades must work together to expose the traitors and restore order to the ship before it's too late.Filled with action, suspense, and humor, Rattlin The Reefer is a thrilling tale of life on the high seas during the Age of Sail. Marryat's vivid descriptions of naval battles and life on board a frigate provide a fascinating glimpse into this fascinating era of history.I soon entered into conversation with one of the young gentlemen who was destined to be, for so long, my messmate. I told him that the air below would kill me. He acknowledged that it was bad enough to kill a dog, but that a reefer could stand it. He also advised me not to have my uniforms altered by the ship's tailors, as it would be done in a bungling manner; but to get leave to go on shore, and that he would introduce me to a very honest tradesman, who would do me justice. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Autorenporträt
Captain Frederick Marryat (an early innovator of the sea story) was a British Royal Navy Officer and novelist. He gained the Royal Human Society's gold medal for bravery, before leaving the services in 1830 to write books. He is mainly remembered for his stories of the sea, many written from his own experiences. He started a series of adventure novels marked by a brilliant, direct narrative style and an absolute fund of incident and fun. These have The King's Own (1830), Peter Simple (1834), and Mr. Midshipman Easy (1836). He also created a number of children's books, among which The Children of the New Forest (1847), a story of the English Civil Wars is a classic of children literature. A Life and Letters was processed by his daughter Florence (1872). He is recognized also for a broadly used system of maritime flag signalling known as Marryat's Code. Familiar for his adventurous novels, his works are known for their representation of deep family bonds and social structure beside naval action. Marryat died in 1848 at the age of fifty.
