Born in Dublin, Ireland, Burke served as a member of parliament between 1766 and 1794 in the House of Commons, Great Britain after moving to London in 1750. Burke was a proponent of underpinning virtues with manners in society and of the importance of religious institutions for the moral stability and good of the state. He is remembered for his support for Catholic emancipatin, the impeachment of Warren Hasting from the East India Company and his staunch opposition to the French Revolution. In the 19th century, Burke was praised by both conservatives and liberals. Subsequently in the 20th century, he became widely regarded as the philosophical founder of conservatism.

Charles D. Tarlton is a retired political science professor who taught at Universities in Victoria, BC CANADA, California and New York and is Professor Emeritus, University at Albany, The State University of New York. Poetry has always been central in his life, even as he pursued a career and a living teaching political ideas. In recent years he has focused almost entirely on writing poems, and this offering Reflections on Edmund Burke is his most recent work. He lives on the shore, now, in Connecticut, with his wife, Ann Knickerbocker, an abstract painter, and Nikki, their black standard poodle.
