This book highlights the vivid application of remote sensing and related advanced technologies to study the diverse landscape, natural resources, infrastructure, and environment in the north eastern Himalayan ecosystem in general and the north eastern region of India in particular. It explores how observation of the earth using satellites and drones along with GNSS and GIS aid in mapping and monitoring of vegetations and agriculture, urban and rural planning, water resource management, governance delivery, etc. with a focus on addressing the challenges faced in mountainous regions. It highlights the strengths of remote sensing technologies in understanding climate change drivers and its impacts, supporting disaster risk reduction initiatives, land use dynamics, and biodiversity conservation efforts in this ecologically sensitive region. The book covers the essential theoretical insights of using different remote sensing data in hilly regions with practical applications and case studies suitably chosen for students, researchers, policymakers, and conservationist striving for sustainable development and management of the north eastern Himalayan ecosystem.
Autorenporträt
Dr. S P Aggarwal is a highly accomplished scientist in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS applications in water resources management, disaster management and climate change impact assessment, currently serving as the Director of NESAC. He has Ph.D. and post-doctoral research experience in the field of hydrological modeling. Dr. Aggarwal has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at addressing the unique challenges of the Himalayan region, including issues related to the effective management of natural resources, supporting disaster risk reduction initiatives, infrastructure planning and monitoring, promoting sustainable development, weather and climate studies, etc.   Dr. Shyam S Kundu earned his Ph D in Physics and is a key member of remote sensing applications in Atmospheric science at NESAC. He has more than 20 years of research experience in characterizing climate change drivers, satellite meteorology, and early warning of meteorological disasters over eastern Himalayan region. He provided scientific leadership in building team and infrastructure with network of instruments to initiate atmospheric science research at NESAC.   Dr. Bijoy K Handique completed his Master's degree in Agricultural Statistics and Ph.D. degree in Statistics and has more than 20 years of experience in space technology applications in agriculture and allied areas. He has demonstrated the applications of different geospatial and geostatistical techniques in innovative ways that has led to successful and timely completion of a number of research studies. He has made significant contribution in developing remote sensing-based methodology for generating useful agro-informatics in hill agricultural system. He is also conducting a number of studies in using unmanned aerial vehicles for various agricultural applications.
