Known as the quero-quero, it belongs to the Charadriiformes order, which has been expanding its geographical distribution throughout Brazil. This is thanks to its adaptation to urban environments and large expanses of open areas covered mainly by local grasses, which are ideal for feeding and breeding. Its uncontrolled population increase has caused problems, for example, at airfields, due to collisions with aircraft, which has led to measures being taken to control the population's aggressive behavior, especially during the reproductive period, when it attacks any intruder who approaches its chicks. The quer-quero's social behaviour is characterized by two distinct phases. During the non-breeding period, they form flocks of more than 50. During the breeding season, between September and March, the birds separate into groups of 3 to 4. We believe that these specimens may be represented by the pair and sub-adults from the previous breeding season who help defend the territory. Thehigh aggressiveness of the species and the low number of predators may be contributing to population growth.
