Nació el 16 de mayo en East Chicago (Indiana, EE.UU.). Fue convertido a Cristo en una reunió n de Juventud para Cristo bajo el ministerio de Billy Graham (v.), en 1945. Estudió en la Universidad de Indiana; en el Northern Baptist Seminary (Th.B., 1953); y en la Universidad Roosevelt de Chicago. Durante su primer pastorado en la Iglesia Bautista Central de East Chicago (1951-57) fue ordenado al ministerio de la Asociació n General de Bautistas Regulares. Nombrado director de la divisió n de literatura de Juventud para Cristo Internacional en Wheaton (Illinois), fue editor de la revista de la asociciació n, hoy titulada Campus Life. Durante dies añ os fue pastor de la Iglesia Bautista Calvario de Covington (1961-71), al que siguió el pastorado de la Iglesia de D. L. Moody de Chicago y el programa de radio Songs in the Night (Canciones en la noche). Má s tarde se dedicó a un ministerio itinerante como conferenciante bí blico, escritor y maestro. Fue director geneal de Back to the Bible (Regreso a la Biblia) en Lincoln (Nebraska, 1980-9). Durante diez añ os fue presidente de la junta misionera Slavic Gospel Association de Wheaton, así como miembro, desde 1984, de The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM), de la misma ciudad. Ha recibido tres doctorados honorí ficos de Tennessee Temple University de Chattanooga; Trinity Evangelical Divinity School de Deerfield y Cedarville College (Ohio), dos en teologí a y uno en letras, respectivamente. Hombre de tremenda humanidad y simpatí a cristiana, ha escrito y editado cerca de cien libros, amé n de la docena de compilaciones.
