In 1290, Margaret, the seven-year-old Queen of Scotland, dies on her voyage from Norway to claim her throne, leaving Scotland in turmoil. Two bitter enemies, John Balliol and Robert de Brus (Robert Bruce), quickly become the leading candidates for the throne. The most powerful families in Scotland, the Comyns and the MacGannons, back Balliol's claim to the throne, though Bruce continues to press his suit and eventually King Edward of England is asked to mediate. He chooses Balliol and it soon becomes clear that Balliol is a puppet of England. The ensuing reign of murder, bloodshed and terror leads to two major rebellions: in the north, young nobleman Andrew de Moray has the support of noble families, and in the south, William Wallace captures the hearts and minds of the commoners.
