This book presents a comparative study on SAE 1045 steel with incremental additions of sulfur and bismuth. The purpose of these additions is to increase the machinability of the steel. However, we evaluated the resulting mechanical properties, given the additions made, compared to standard SAE 1045 steel. SAE 1045 steel was chosen because it is widely used in the metalworking industry for the manufacture of mechanical components that are applied in systems subject to bending, torsion, axial and shear loads. The tests performed built a database that allows conclusions to be drawn about the application potential of this steel with small additions of bismuth. The publication contains a study of fatigue behavior through the analysis of dA/dN versus delta K curves.
