SCOPE is an adventure/travel book about a pot-smoker Scope McGlocklin who hitchhikes to California and meets a bunch of colorful "road" characters along the way. He lands in Imperial Beach California and hooks up with a local surfer Park Mercury, who lets him stay at his beach house. Scope stays for 2 weeks and experiences the Southern California beach town lifestyle of the early 1970's. He goes bodysurfing, gets high all the time and goes to a 4th of July rock n' roll party. But after 2 weeks of partyin' he starts to burn out and grows concerned that he's turning into a transient/homeless person. He decides he needs to get out of Imperial Beach but isn't sure what to do or where to go. Then a friend of Park's, Dusty, shows up. Dusty is a biker and after hearing about Scope's concerns offers him a ride to San Francisco. Scope goes for it and they travel up on the West Coast on a chopped Harley. Dusty is into doing LSD so he and the biker take an LSD trip at Big Sur. Scope has the most incredible experience of his life but is very glad to come back to reality when the drug wears off. The next day he and Dusty part ways in San Francisco. Scope walks through the iconic city trying to put into perspective what he has seen, thought and learned from his psychedelic experience. He'd discovered that the perceptual abilities of the human mind were far, far more powerful than anyone had ever imagined. He realized that there was much, much more to man's existence than what meets the eyes and that there was no limit or boundary to what could be in life. He also understands that his hitchhiking trip is over and that he better get back to reality before it's too late, The last thing he does is buy a newspaper to look for a job.
