Selenginsk is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Kabansky District of the Republic of Buryatia, Russia, located at the head of the Selenge River delta about 30 kilometers (19 mi) from Lake Baikal and about 50 kilometers (31 mi) northwest of Ulan-Ude. It is on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Trans-Siberian Highway. Population: 16,326 (2002 Census); 15,233 (1989 Census). The settlement was established in 1961 as a Komsomol project around a paper mill. In post-Soviet times the paper mill was seen as a major source of pollution.
