Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 ? 1882) fue profesor en la Universidad de Harvard y pastor unitario hasta 1832, cuando dimitió tras perder a su esposa. Defendió la teoría trascendentalista, que sostiene que la esencia de las cosas se alcanza mediante un proceso de contemplación, intuición y éxtasis. Más tarde, sus conferencias integrarían Hombres representativos (1850), un libro sobre personajes que tipifican los principales modos de personalidad, y seis años después publicó Inglaterra y el carácter inglés.
