Autorenporträt
Leopoldo Enrique Garc a-Alas y Ure a, widely known by his pen name Clar n, was a Spanish novelist and prominent critic. Born on April 25, 1852, in Zamora, Spain, he became one of the leading figures in Spanish realism. Clar n's work is characterized by his strong advocacy of liberalism and his outspoken anti-clerical stance, which made him both a controversial and influential voice in his time. His incisive critiques, especially through his written articles, also known as paliques, contributed significantly to the cultural and political discourse of 19th-century Spain. Despite his sharp criticisms of society and the church, his works are deeply insightful and reflect a keen understanding of human psychology. His most famous novel, La Regenta, examines themes of repression, societal expectation, and the complexities of human desire. Clar n's works have earned him a lasting place in Spanish literary history. He died on June 13, 1901, in Oviedo, Spain, at the age of 49. He was married to Onofre Garc a Arg elles y Garc a-Bernardo, and they had one child, Leopoldo Garc a-Alas Garc a-Arg elles. His parents were Leocadia Ure a and Genaro Garc a-Alas.
