Autorenporträt
Joshua Sir Reynolds, notably recognized for his seminal work 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' Discourses,' was an English painter, specializing in portraits. Born in Plympton, Devon, on July 16, 1723, Reynolds grew up in an intellectual and artistic environment, which fostered his development into a leading cultural figure of 18th-century Britain. He gained extensive acclaim for his proficiency in using the Grand Style of painting, which emphasized idealization of the imperfect. He became the first President of the Royal Academy of Arts and used his position to elevate the status of art and artists in society. While Reynolds' artistic contributions are well-known, his writings, particularly 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' Discourses,' also had a significant impact. The collection of lectures, delivered to the Royal Academy between 1769 and 1790, is a treasure trove of art theory and criticism. In these discourses, Reynolds argued for the importance of studying the great masters and the cultivation of an artist's judgment, often reflecting his passion for classicism and his own artistic principles. Over time, Reynolds' influence waned as tastes shifted towards Romanticism, but he remains a pivotal figure in understanding the artistic debates and practices of his time. His discourses are still studied for their insight into art education and philosophy, marking him as an important thinker as well as a distinguished artist. Reynolds passed away on February 23, 1792, but his legacy as a leading art theorist and practitioner endures.
