At thirty-two, Christine Sixkiller, granddaughter of the Haida chief of the Raven community, has returned to Haida Gwaii's islands. She has returned to take over her family's commercial fishing business after the death of her father. With a law degree, working for several years as an attorney in the District Attorney's office in Victoria, British Columbia, has prepared her to become the Masset Haida community's legal arm. Far from just being a lawyer, she is a woman most extraordinary. Gifted with eyesight far beyond normal, she also possesses powers of shapeshifting and visions. Still, she has many doubts about her ability to lead when she becomes the matriarchal leader. The Haida Nation will be tested. Fish stocks are dwindling in their territorial waters, and marine mammals are beaching themselves, damaged by something that affects hearing and brain function. Climate change is beginning to affect the islands of Haida Gwaii. Christine repeatedly crosses the line that divides her native culture from the twenty-first century and uses all of her skills and abilities to protect her nation. In the process, will she emerge as the unquestioned matriarchal leader of her tribe, or fail and become irrelevant?
