In this study, we seek to analyse the representations of gender roles, especially those of women, present in textbooks for grades 1 to 4 of primary education used in Brazilian schools during the 1980s. Based on theoretical studies on the concepts of Social Representation, Gender and Education, including studies on teaching materials, we began our research by identifying and searching for textbooks used during this period. The teaching collection chosen was Caminho Suave (Smooth Path) by educator Branca Alves de Lima, which we analysed in detail. We focused our investigation on analysing how women appear in this collection, both in images and in texts. Finally, we presented some considerations on the analysis carried out in the books, highlighting that the prevailing representation of women in the teaching collection is that of a woman of the home, mother, housewife, in addition to some stereotypes.
