So I Finally Wrote My Book is a heartfelt journey through time, family, perseverance and love. It chronicles the life story of a couple who understood the importance of service to country, to community and to family. After a ten year childless wait, the pair adopted Keith, Linda, Marianne, Shannon and Kirk, ages 12 through 6, from Toronto Canada. Five years later the couple was blessed by the birth of Jill and then Jane. Because of the age difference, in some ways it was like having two families, but it developed into one big happy group. The story is highlighted by the rare inclusion of both husband and wife voices. The collaborative narrative with Mary Lou provides perspective and depth. An unforgettable life story that reads like a warm conversation with an old friend, it is honest, funny and moving. From a family legacy viewpoint this memoir is a treasure.
Hal Unger served in the Army as an Intelligence Specialist at the Pentagon, then as a civilian for the Army in Personnel Management in the DC area. He and his wife Mary Lou moved to Toms River NJ where he became the Civilian Personnel Director and later Total Quality Leadership Director at the Naval Base at Lakehurst NJ. The couple adopted a sibling group of five. and then were surprised by two biological daughters. After retirement Hal ran a successful consulting business working with the state to improve school systems. In his later years he served two terms as president of the Ocean County Historical Society. The couple still live on a mini-farm in Toms River where they have raised sheep, geese, a turkey, cats, dogs, tended to their gardens and still continue to be the center of many family gatherings.
