Based on presentations at a seminar on March 9-10, 2006 at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The book traces the trajectory, location, and concerns of the discipline of Sociology of Education (SoE) in India. It makes theoretical and empirical engagements with the emerging key concerns of education today, which include themes of equality, identity, cultural diversity, and exclusion. It insists upon an understanding of education as a social institution. It is the first collective re-appraisal of the journey of SoE in India since the 1960s.
