This study broadens our knowledge in the function and importance of (SMS) Short Message Service, For instance, It is being used as an invitation, for passing information and serving as reminders of invitation, etc. It reveals why some linguistic options were preferred to others in texting. Finally, it enriches the existing literature on the roles linguistics play in teaching and learning of the English Language especially in the ESL situations like Nigeria. This study concerns itself with the linguistic analysis of SMS text messages collected from forty students on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.
