Pharmacology is the science of drugs. Its study is vital in human, pharmaceutical and veterinary medicine, since drugs are the main weapon available to paramedics and veterinary surgeons to cure or relieve the sick. This course is aimed primarily at third-year undergraduate students in human and veterinary medicine at university institutions. It therefore focuses on what doctors, pharmacists and nurses need to know and understand in order to make the best use of medicines. As a result, many aspects of pharmacology - particularly fundamental, technical and experimental - are more or less ignored. The reader will soon realize, however, that this is no mere aide-memoire. It has a much broader ambition, namely to serve as a reference for students throughout their course of study and, why not, beyond. Any successful education or apprenticeship involves structuring (even if this is followed by rejection as personality, events or knowledge evolve).
