The "social studies" made such a development appear understandable. Regardless of this, the development led to a climax in regional geography research and a central focus in school lessons. School geography led to problem areas such as the rigidity of the scheme, the overemphasis on collecting facts and the implementation of general knowledge. The justification of a sequence of continents and states was problematic. The changes after the Second World War highlighted the need for didactic innovations.
