It is the principal organ of taste, chewing, swallowing and speech. It is a muscular structure forming part of oral cavity floor. The anterior part which is the visible part situated at the front and roughly constitutes two- thirds of tongue length. The posterior part is the closest to the throat and roughly constitutes one- third of tongue length. The left and right sides of the tongue are separated by lingual septum. The anterior tongue is thin and narrow at its apex; it is directed forward against the lingual surfaces of the lower incisor teeth. The posterior part at its root directed backward and connected with the hyoid bone.
