Sphagnum Valley is a valley sloping northwest from Echo Pass to Cumberland West Bay, South Georgia. First charted by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition under Nordenskjold, 1901-04. Surveyed by the SGS in the period 1951-57 and named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) after Sphagnum, the bog moss which occurs in this valley. Cumberland West Bay is a bay forming the western arm of Cumberland Bay, South Georgia. It is entered southward of Larsen Point, where it is 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and extends 7 miles (11 km) in a southwest direction. This feature was surveyed by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, 1901 04, who named it West Bay. It was remapped during 1926 29 by DI personnel and renamed West Cumberland Bay.
