CYNTHIA M. TAEUBER is the chief of the age and sex statistics branch of the population division of the Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C. She has written extensively on the depopulating regions of the U.S., the current older population, and the implications of the aging baby boom generation, as well as demographic studies of U.S. women.
